2002 Colorado: DEN -> LAX

Wednesday 10 July 2002

We awake far too early in the morning to make sure we have lots of buffer time before our flights are to depart. I factor in traffic troubles, mistakes in understanding the directions, screw-ups at the car rental return, issues with the shuttle bus, and check-in woes. I hate missing a plane, and I don't mine sitting in an airport café for a while, watching humanity and airplanes.

But things go well. We travel by the Garden of the Gods as we bypass the morning congestion in Colorado Springs, jump on the highway, head north for a bit over an hour, and are rewarded with a clear run for the airport. At the last minute I get confused with the turn-off road, but Emil saves the day and brings us directly into the car rental spot.

We go through security, and of course Mom and Emil are subjected to an intensive hands-on take-off-your-shoes inspection. I take the time to change Isaac's diaper. We go our separate ways (our flights leave about the same time, although Emil almost misses his (by an extended stay at the burger barn :-)) and arrive at LAX. The wheelchair helper takes us through three parking garages as a short-cut, instead of walking the oval path connecting the terminals. It's a little eerie, but faster.

We make it to the departure terminal, shown below. It looks as though it hasn't been upgraded since the mid-1960s. One of the most depressing airport tableaux I've had the misfortunes of seeing. But we make the best of it, even though we find out we'll be here for a couple of hours more than expected.

We visit the café, where we dig into the two plastic bags of food Rose brought along. Only my grandmother would wear all white, eat nothing but a whole bag of cherries, and sport no stains. Here she is feeding Lila. (It reminds me a bit of the photos of Oma feeding Isaac in the summer of 1999 at the Zell Am Sea, in Austria.)

Finally we're airborne again, heading back to San Francisco. The weather at SFO is perfect, and we're scheduled to make up some time we missed getting to LAX. Lila loves seeing herself in the video camera's LCD screen. In the background you can see Omi and Isaac, on the other side of the aisle.

Lila also really loves the in-flight airphones, which are even more fun to play with now that the service has been terminated. There's nothing quite like having a phone handset to pull and watch retract, preferably hundreds of times.

And here we are back in our tiny cottage in San Francisco. It's dinner-time, and we've got the candles out, a quick dinner I cooked, and a happy family. Why is the photo fuzzy? Well, I could answer that it's an artistic interpretation of being tired after a long trip, but the silly truth is that I got the camera stuck in macro-focus mode and couldn't figure out how to return it to normal focus until the next day.

And there you have it, the travelogue for our 2002 Colorado family get-togther. Thanks for coming along. I hope you enjoyed visiting with us.
