The Dolomites were named after Deodat de Dolomieu, a French geologist who, in 1789, discovered an unusual carbonate rock in the mountains which had strange properties. "Dolomite" became the name of both the mineral as well as the mountain range in which he found it.

The Dolomites, situated between the Austrian border to the north and the Venetian plain to the south, form part of the Oriental Italian Alps.

All around us are jagged grey and red massifs which tower so high that the eye sometimes thinks they're dark clouds. It's just amazing watching how their appearance changes as the sun moves from dawn to dusk.

We had the chance to ski down, climb up, and cross-country across the Dolomites. What a pleasure, being so high up, with so many peaks and crags within sight.

It makes me want to try something really high. Everest, anyone?
