Album 1999.06.15
In the summer of 1999 we had our family get-together in the Tyrolean Alps of Austria; we're staying near the snow line, high above the village of Mühlbach am Hochkönig.
Rose, Isaac, and I went with the family on long hikes. Isaac saw cows up close. We enjoyed fresh milk (and I do mean fresh) and fresh air.

One of the highlights of our walking around was the fields of fresh berries, ready for the picking. So many that it was easy to sit in a field and pick whatever was within reach. I haven't yet gotten the berry stains out of my shorts... |

Salzburg was such an amazing little city. The little tyke really enjoyed the nightlife. |
We had a great time in the oldest restaurant in Europe, Salzburg's Saint Peter's Cellar. Carved into the side of a stone hill, this visually arresting eatery has a multitude of rooms to explore, antiques to enjoy. Isaac liked one of the old school desks. |

The weather was kind to us. It rained for just enough time for us to see the sights in a complete variedy of climates. But even the cool rain didn't slow us down: I just zipped Isaac up into my Gore-Tex mountaineering jacket and we kept on going. Here you see us on a path from the Salzburg fortress down into the city, metal rooftops behind us. |
The alpingasthaus Bergheimat turned out to be a great base of operations for the Austrian portion of the trip. (There's another ten days in London, to be documented later.) The food was good, the rooms comfortable, and the staff friendly and helpful. Best of all, it was only ten minutes by rental car to the village below, and another twenty or so (at 150 kph) to the Salzburg Süd Park & Ride, and another ten minutes by bus into the city center.
On our last night we stopped long enough for a group photo. Here's an index, in the order that I thought made the most sense:
- me
- my wife, Rose
- our child, Isaac
- my mother, Karin
- her second husband, Emil
- my sister, Felicia
- her husband, Adam
- my uncle Daniel (whom you may remember from my 1995 Eivissa and Gran Canaria trip)
- my cousin Myra
- my maternal grandmother, Marga

At the end of our trip we spent a day in Munich, Germany. It was great to enjoy such a small town after the really big city of London. Here Isaac is enraptured by an mechanical mobile mounted in front of a toy shop. |
