Burning Man 2010 - Santa Cruz UnScruz Decompression
2 October 2010
Today is the Santa Cruz Burning Man 2010 Decompression party - UnScruz (pronounced "un-screws"). I've been tapped to lead the Black Rock Ranger presence (a role called "Khaki"). So, after a late night of packing everything I need and a few I hopefully won't I head into the Pony and drive out of the Castro at 0651. It's cold an clear this time of the morning.
Eight minutes I'm in a fogbank, with visibility quickly dropping. Luckily I left a good amount of time for the trip, so I'm in no rush at all.
Before 10:00 the signs are up, the gates are being fastened together with some tie-wraps from my Jeep, all the Rangers who signed up for a shift (or two) are either on-site or on schedule for a later arrival. Big thanks to

Sir Bill, pressed into early duty for our sister organization, High Rock Security, is doing yeoman's duty dealing with the miscreants who make themselves known. Sir Bill doesn't need to say things twice.
The one-block party as seen from the Ranger HQ, halfway down the block, next to the Pony.
The event as seen from the Pacific Street side of things, the main entrance.
Night falls, but the party continues on, loud and boisterous. There's a great Indian restaurant at the end of the block, which keeps us in hot and tasty Masala Tea (chai).
There's a very heavy crowd around the fire-dancers, who don't disappoint.
At 00:41, almost nineteen hours after rolling out of bed, I return to San Francisco. I'm ready for my pillow. Thanks to all the volunteers for putting on a good show.
