Burning Man 2008 - Playa ROM, p. 1
Friday 4 July 2008 | |
As we pass over Emigrant Pass the smoke from the fires burning all over California mecomes very obvious. Everything is obscured by grey, and the smell of a wood fire permeates everything.
In Reno we stop to pick up those things not worth dragging over the Sierra Nevada; water, soda, snacks, and a deli sandwich for tomorrow's class. Because Nevada is an open-carry state, my new H&K USP Compact .40SW gets to ride in the open air (and stays there until we're about to cross the state line back into the nanny state in which I love to live).
Having reached near to the end of our trip, we have dinner at Bruno's Café, Gerlach, NV. Chicken-fried steak, white gravy, home-fried potatoes, green salad, and lots of hot, tasty coffee. I met Bruno for the first time ever (that I recall) and had the pleasure of thanking him for years of hospitality.
We find the Playa ROM location, Dog Camp, at 40ª47'15.78"N, 119ª15'20.28"W. Rangers Fuzzy and Wicked are already working on the bangstix activities. (There's a lot more going on at a ROM than shooting at things, but as I'm enjoying it these last few years you'll probably see it disproportionately represented here.)
Ranger Buzzcut placed a lit road flare on a propane cylinder, but in a location that Wicked's shot through extinguished it rather than causing an explosion. Perhaps putting the flare a short distance away...
Rangers Fuzzy and Wicket watch the goings-on.
Ranger DarkStar takes a turn at showing off her hunting prowess. No bushes were killed in the sniping of targets.
As the sun sets on the Black Rock Desert I get Ranger Fuzzy in a pose with his .357.
Our burn barrel, being loaded with wood and paper.
Things are getting fired up. The barbeques are going. Conversations start. Bangstix are put away.
