2000 Amsterdam - More Views
April 2002, continued
This is a huge square, filled with tables from all the cafés and bars which cater to the student (and hipster) population. There was an Internet café too, but I really didn't want to take the time to connect. The people who needed them had all the phone numbers. Frequently I update my travelogue web sites while I'm still overseas, often on the same day as the journal is written, but not this time.
![]() Here's a very representative view of an Amsterdam canal. Working boats in the foreground, narrow houses in the background.
![]() One day we tried to have lunch at a well-regarded Chinese restaurant. (Yes, usually we eat local food, but this place had a local connection and we'd already tried most of the other Dutch / Indonesian classics. Even a few unusual places, like one which specializes in game. The restaurant was closed. The owner came out and profusely apologised; the hired help was ill. Could we please, please, please come back that evening? Sadly, no. Our train out was in a few hours. Dejected, we headed back towards our hotel and stumbled across this tiny Indonesian restaurant. The food was fiery, but delicious. And the owner reminded me of my Uncle Daniel.
![]() Done with our last Amsterdam meal, we head back to our hotel to pick up our bags and return to the Centraal Station. This is what we see along the way.
