2000 Münster

April 2002

It's morning in Germany, at my Oma's house. [Edit: now that we have offspring, we call Oma "Omi", and we call my mother "Oma". If you think it's confusing for you, reading this, .... ] Here we see Rose, sister-in-law Pamela, and Omi at the früstuck table, but instead of breakfast we're having a very late arrival snack. Omi's name, if you couldn't tell by the hand-painted sign on the window-sill, is Marga.

Here's Omi in her tiny kitchen (which is about the same size as the kitchen in our place). The stuff she can whip up in that little space is amazing. Don't ever believe anyone who tries to convince you it's necessary to have a six-burner monster oven to provide an amazing, multi-course meal for a crowd. Omi (and Oma) both can hold their own in a variety of cuisines, but Omi is the baker's baker. I remember growing up with homemade seven-layer cakes, tiramisu, and other things usually not spotted outside of a bakery.

The next morning - see the light streaming in through the window behind Omi? - we're all better rested, the railway journey behind us. Isaac is happy to see his great-grandmother again, even if his playtime is constantly interrupted with admonitions not to destroy something at kid-level. He seems to take it in stride.

Next, we travel to our Münster synagogue.
