Burning Man 1998: Black Rock Rangers
Sunday morning. Coffee, breakfast, and a nap. Then it's time to go back out on patrol. My first stop after calling dispatch and being returned to active duty status is the Ranger headquarters, where cold, low batteries are swapped for fresh, warm ones.
The next few pages will show the sights sorted by topic, rather than the usual chronological narration. Here are some pictures of Ranger life.
Ranger Big Bear gets into one of the golf carts we use to respond to emergency calls.
A Ranger takes a nap while on communications duty. Even when asleep, one ear listens to the traffic. (That's the secret behind the Ranger Paging channel. We're always on duty. :-)
We even had an airborne parachute Ranger this year. Excellent! To protect and to fly.
Ranger Canyon Spirit at the briefing.
Larry Harvey addresses the Rangers.
 Burning Man founder
Joseph, also known as Ranger b18 (pronounced "baker18"), the Ranger Emergency Services Coördinator, sets direction and tidies up the thoughts about yesterday.
Larry Harvey and Burning Man Communications Director Maid Marion listen.
One of the media groups enters the Ranger compound. Notice the lack of formal attire. One of the best ideas of 1998 was to require the media groups to register and to participate. This group has adapted very well, and is getting lots of enthusiastic coöperation for it.
The sound guy gets into the vibe!
Meeting done. I go back out on patrol, admiring the art cars.
