2004-02 Gran Canaria: Lila is two-and-a-half years old today

Friday 13 February 2004

Lila is two-and-a-half years old today! Happy half-birthday honey!!!

Last evening, at dusk, we saw a brown smudge along most of the horizon (which from Playa del Inglés is looking east, towards the Sahara Desert of Africa).

I remember having the sides of buildings, car windshields, and my teeth covered with a fine oily sand on a day years ago when the sky was brown-orange, so I knew what might be in store for us. This is what the locals call a shirocco. As it turned out, the eastward wind seems to have overcome the westward, and we've been spared the sand from the skies.

We took the bus to Maspalomas, but the wind (which seemed to be coming from the north or north-west) drove the sand more than the kids were willing to endure. Isaac noticed it was a bit like a bad day at Burning Man. Then we returned to Playa del Inglés, where we spent another hour or two at the playground at the C. C. Yumbo".

Dinner with Omi Marga, then a return to the Café de Paris to enjoy a bit more of Los Guanches Norteños. The kids were up, and in a good mood, until rather late; I think they fell asleep around 23:30.

But why no photos for you? Because I can't find my camera anywhere. Rose remembers seeing it in her backback in the middle of the afternoon on the incredibly windy beach, and I am somewhat sure that I took it out of my pocket when I emptied my pockets at Omi's place at dinnertime. Perhaps it's at Omi's still. I'll check tomorrow.

Tomorrow we return to Paddy Murphy's for a late breakfast.
