Casio Exilim EX-Z4U

WARNING: Do not buy any Casio Exilim cameras! While their fit and finish are superb, and the pictures are excellent, they don't hold up to even the dust within pockets, making it useless for its intended purpose. Furthermore, I've heard terrible things about Casio support in dealing with this issue; I'm not encouraged about the reception my cameras will receive. An update will be posted. This saddens me a great deal, as I've grown to love these cameras. I have, instead, purchased a dustproof and waterproof Pentax Optio W10.

Casio EX-Z4U Tuesday 4 November 2003

I acquire a Casio Exilim EX-Z4U today, just one of a long line of digital cameras of mine.

This 4 megapixel tiny wonder is about the size of a credit card. It has a 3x optical and 4x digital zoom, takes photos of 2304 x 1728 pixel resolution, and weighs next to nothing.

But the best thing about it, in contrast to my workhorse Nikon CoolPix 950, is that it fits into the front pocket of my kilts without any protest at all. This is hopefully the solution to the dozens of times I've wanted to take a photo and realized that I haven't brought along a digital camera. No more.

Not much of a technical overview, but at least you get to see me and the camera during our visit to the last few days of the old building of the California Academy of Sciences.

The EX-Z4U is no more. Lost one very windy day in Gran Canaria. No great loss, either, as I found out that I'd had a castrated camera foisted upon me. We US buyers get a camera with the most insanely great feature hacked out.

Read about it. Be furious.
