Pentax Optio W10

Wednesday 5 April 2006

After my exceedingly miserable experiences with the Casio Exilim EX-Z4 and EX-Z750 I needed another digital camera. More importantly, I needed a pocket camera which can survive the ravages of the lint and dust usually present in pockets.

After a bit of research, I purchase a dustproof and waterproof Pentax Optio W10. I'm hoping that it is better suited for daily use. My first impressions include:

  • The fit and finish, user interface, and size of the Casio are superior, more well-thought-out. (On the other hand, they failed to work. That's bad.)

  • The images produced by the Pentax, although 6.0 megapixels (vs. 7.2 mp of the last Casio), are more clear and sharp. I have to do a bit more comparison to be sure.

  • The video produced by the Pentax, four times the number of pixels, is sharp; video stabilization is applied. Unlike the Casio, the zoom is available during video. Unfortunately, the sound of the zoom mechanism can be heard, so it's worthwhile only when planning to do a voice-over or other replacement of the sound.

  • The battery-saving feature, which quickly dims the display, is annoying (to me). I may be able to tweak this.

  • The grid overlay, which I find so esthetically pleasing, seems not to be available with the Pentax. More research needed; reading the manual might be indicated.

  • The battery must be recharged outside of the camera body, in an optional charger, presumably to maintain a waterproof capability. This is annoying, especially as there is a provision for supplying DC to the camera for in-studio use. They've left out the recharging circuits; an irritating mistake.

The camera feels good.. Having the moving parts working internally, instead of grinding in and out of the main body, feels like better engineering for a camera designed to live in a pocket.

I'm happy with my first twenty-four hours experience with the Pentax Optio W10 (mostly at the San Francisco Zoo). I have high hopes. More to follow.
