2004 Truckee-Donner: The Biltmore & Lake Tahoe
Tuesday 29 June 2004
Isaac rouses me at 06:30. "Papa," he says, "I'm not tired. Let's go for a drive." Rather than have the girls (and the rest of the family) be woken, we stealthfully dress and head to the garage. Ahhhh, the garage. The car is alarmed and the garage door is closed. Will this wake 'em? Beep, beep! Alarm off. Grind, grind, grind. Garage door open. We make a break for it.
Before we drag the rest of the extended family to the lake, we try it ourselves. It's only about a quarter-hour.
The folks at the Cal-Neva (the casino resort which straddles the state line) told us they don't do a breakfast buffet any more, but suggested that we try the Biltmore, just up the road. Here we are, eating an à la carte breakfast. (Pretty unimpressive fare, unfortunately. Stay away, at least until I find a good buffet and report back.)
![]() Back at the rental house, I take a nap. Isaac and Lila pile bears on me, then Lila joins me on the sofa.
![]() One of the attractions of the house is a whirlpool bathtub, and the kids have been asking non-stop for a dip. We put too much bubblebath into the water; the jets generated way too many suds. Rose was scooping out bowlful after bowlful. But it was fun.
![]() Okay, then it was time to get everyone out of the house. We got into our cars and headed to Lake Tahoe. Here's the view from the north edge of the lake.
![]() Some of us pose; here I am. Behind me, on the horizon, is rain falling on South Lake Tahoe.
![]() But for now, we head onwards to Tahoe City, where we delight in a feast of Hawai'ian food at Jake's. Highly recommended. We'll get back to the subject of weather tomorrow.
