1999 Austria / London / Munich: Salzburg (2)
As we walk from the funicular to the castle we pass by a painting of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Outside we see a brick walkway, part of the castle's defenses.
Photos weren't allowed in the castle, so we resume our narrative outside, as we begin walking back down into the old city. Looking up, along the battlements, the castle appears. This was - not to state the obvious - a hard place to attack. Sometimes the obvious just becomes apparent. I sat there for a moment, feeling small, until Isaac let me know that it was time to continue walking.
The view from on high is impressive. The roofs of the old town are the rich green of oxidized copper.
Rosie stands at the top of the path. You can see how steep this is; a challenge with a large party, or a party with old and young.
The way down brings us sights and sounds of birds and wind. Soon we're at the rooftop level. Soon we're peering into the attic windows, tiny portals in a massive slate roof.
To our left are the spires of a pretty church. We take a closer look.
Near the bottom of the path, before we return to the central plaza, we come across our lunchtime stop, a brewery which dates back to 1492.
