1999 Austria / London / Munich: Zell Am Sea

Today we've decided to visit the nearby town of Zell Am Sea, which we've been told has a pretty view of a lake and a cute downtown. We climb into the rental and head off. A local tourist map - an nth generation photocopy of something probably originally acquired at one of the chain hotels - lies in my lap. We follow the winding roads down from the alpingasthaus Bergheimat into Mühlbach am Hochkönig. The next decision: modern autobahn or old backroads? We choose the latter and are soon rewarded by a glimpse of farming life. Young horses are herded along the road, giving us a wonderful view of something we'd never have seen at 150 kph.

Not much later we see cows being herded as well. Isaac is only six months old, but he notices the animals. Or perhaps he's reacting to us jumping up and down and making cow and horse noises.

We reach the end of the road (literally) when we arrive at the Grand Hotel in Zell am Sea. Driving any further gets your car very, very wet. (That horizonal glass thing you see is a tour boat.)

We take a seat at the hotel's outdoor café and enjoy a long look around us. The lake is tranquil, private and tour boats motor around us. The sun shines off of the two peaks in the distance (which have snow at the highest altitudes). The leaves above us make a soothing sound as we sip our hot cocoa.

We begin to feed Isaac before we go to Moßhammer.
