What's New? 2008-09-01
Here I am, with glowstick and omnipresent cup of water - must hydrate - in hand. You can see the light from the backpack has automatically turned on at night, but the sunglasses don't disappear nocturnally. I haven't really tweaked my avatar as much as I want to, nor have I found a good kilt to replace the quick-and-dirty khaki-colored skirt I'm wearing, but it's a reasonable approximation of my RL appearance.
This is the beginning of the
Here I am, walking on water at Ranger HQ, with Center Camp being rezzed in front of me. One of the first things to always be drawn are the roads in Black Rock City, which you can very clearly see here.
Burning Life, having so many "prims" (virtual objects), is seriously taxing the Second Life servers and crashing somewhat frequently. Later in the event we'll see updated server software deployed across all sims.
Back in the Ranger tent - check out the interesting recreation of an aluminet shade structure - we're discussing evictions from the virtual world, and how it differs from on-playa mediation and conflict resolution.
The person to whom I'm talking is grey because his clothes haven't "rezzed", that is to say, been downloaded to my computer and drawn properly.
Much later in the day I'm chatting with Danger Ranger, with his RL car, the Red Death, in the room. You know, after a while, you stop thinking this sort of thing is strange.
I'm working on getting pictures from the last 40 days or so up on the site, so be just a wee bit patient. Thanks.

Here we are patrolling Center Camp. (When the sim is "live" people's names appear over their heads, but not in the snapshots. So I've got no clues as to most Rangers' names. Sorry. Let me know and I'll update these pages.) I've been gifted the 2007 Ranger Backpack and told where the freebie tent for those awesome glowsticks is located. 29 September 2008
One of the enhancements to Second Life that seems obvious is the default pattern for yet-to-be-drawn areas. It's set to be sparkling ocean water, when playa dust would have been much more appropriate for this simulation. 28 September 2008
Dusty, the General, and I are chatting about all things Rangerly somewhere on the virtual playa. (I found out later that our avatars face wherever the mouse is positioned on the screen, and mine is evidently near the bottom of my screen, in the chat input window.) 27 September 2008
I just found out about Burning Life, the re-creation of Burning Man in the Second Life virtual environment, a few hours ago. Here I am (at left, in hat) sitting in on our on-playa Ranger Orientation Meeting (ROM). Speaking are Dusty and Danger Ranger (the founder of the real-life Rangers). 26 September 2008

I'm back from Burning Man 2008 and somewhat rested, although returning to "day mode" from "night mode" is truly the 12-hour jet lag issue. Dusty laundry is being done, naps are being enjoyed, and we've done sleepovers out-of-doors for the last two evenings.
