February 2 -- Mount Shasta City, CA to Susanville, CA
![]() As I headed northeast towards California's remote Modoc County, I couldn't help but snap one last picture of Mount Shasta, to show how she dominates her surroundings. I must be at least 50 miles from the mountain, and just look how big she still is. I could still feel the energy coming off her. It felt like she was watching me, as I looked over and responded with my own devic energy. I hope to summit Mount Shasta some day, if she allows me. February 4 -- Susanville, CA to Reno, NV My drive goal for the day was an ambitious one, of the long-haul nature: drive northwest from Lassen County through Modoc; traverse the high-altitude passes in Modoc National Forest; descend into the Great Basin that spans the California-Nevada border; drive south along the vast, remote Black Rock Desert in Nevada; visit close to the desert spot near Gerlach, NV where the Burning Man festival is held; catch a dinner at Bruno's; and then make it to a hotel bed in Reno by the end of the day.
![]() This photo shows the road sign that points me to Gerlach, NV, home to Burning Man in the Black Rock Desert. The photo also shows what I have in store real soon: a mountain range that appears not as dramatic & serrated as Shasta's or Lassen's, but formidable nonetheless. Check out this range I'm headed towards in the distance. Let's see it close-up.
