new windshield seals

Not all is happy in rainy San Francisco this autum. The floor on the driver's side is damp, nay wet, whenever it rains. And it's been raining a lot. And I'm rather sensitive to water in cars since the boneheads who sold me the VW Fox poorly added an after-market sunroof which leaked until I caulked it with silicone aquarium sealant (which really worked well).

There's so much water getting in that there's a puddle under the windshield, where the VIN is located. I chat with the dealer, and they're pretty sure it's the rubber unit under the windshield, around the wipers.

So I called the independent repair shop which has been maintaining this car and ask for a referral, whom I then call. They pick up the part and come over. When they arrive Isaac takes the car keys and lets them in.

They park their van nearby, and come out with the part. This can't be the cause of the leak, they say, because this part doesn't actually seal anything. It's mostly cosmetic. Thanks, dealership, for nothing.

So they run a hose from the air compressor in their van to our car. They blow forced air around the windshield seals and show me that it's significantly gone. There is a five- or six-inch section on my side of the car which has no seal at all. With the air blowing it open it's easy to see; without it the windshield seals look just fine.

A quick phone call to a friend: a replacement set of seals and windshield are available. The car will be back in a few hours. And it was. And the leakage problem was significantly reduced.

There's still a bit of dampness, and fellow enthusiasts have had luck fixing both a disconnected sunroof drain and the driver's side window seals in the door. As soon as I pick up a good repair manual I'll start down those paths.

As the rain starts again Isaac dashes into the car, this time to a drier interior.
