1999 Austria / London / Munich: Leicester Square
Leicester Square is one of the best-known destinations for the twenty-something party set.
Near the middle of London, in-between the Leicester and Charing Cross stations on the Underground, it's a fun place to visit both day and night.
There's a great variety of street performers and garage bands which frequent the square, buskering (performing for spare change). It was the only place in London which seemed a magnet for pickpockets; we didn't see any (although we were there during the off-season).
Here's a panorama of Leicester Square, taken in the early afternoon. Not too many people fill the square. There's a music group in the middle of the scene. We take the leftmost walkway onward to Covent Garden Marketplace.
Next, Speaker's Corner.
