Lefty across America: 2003 - 02 - 03 (4)

February 4 -- Susanville, CA to Reno, NV (continued)

A good friend once said to me: "Prayer is when you are talking to God. Meditation is when you are listening to God." I liked that. It resonated, and continues to be a model for me when I visit prayer & meditation.

Like Lassen, Modoc was formed by volcanic rock activity. The rocks are jagged, hard, and feel like pumice to the touch. Dip into the 'longer now', and one witnesses its eruptive nature, energy, & power. Uhh...well...I guess ya had to be there.....

This shot is of the Big Basin as I descend into it, leaving the heights of the Modoc region behind. Quite a contrast in terrain; abrupt and dramatic.

The Big Basin resides some in California but mostly in Nevada. It is the remnant of a grand wetlands area that was here for tens of thousands of years; that is, until the Sierra mountain range sprouted, grew, and eventually blocked most of the rain & moisture from Pacific storms that had created the prehistoric lakes & wetlands.

What you see here is a vast, ancient lakebed drying up. Since this was wintertime, its rainy season, the Basin had collected some water from winter storms that made it past the Sierra. Not much though. And a lot of what looks like water is part mirage, part wet mud.

As you can probably detect by now in my photos, my photography is starting to pick up on composition. I love nature's textures -- there's so many! all beautiful! -- and this photo captures several in what seems a holy balance.

The way we humans have added to this balance is, well, debatable. Now, I was thankful that the road was well-paved, if but long & winding; and that my vehicle still running smoothly.

Dropping the role of the 'accused accuser', I started getting excited as I drove along this remote two-lane highway, knowing that the next sacred site up-to-bat for me would be at the end of this asphalt ribbon.

(Watch as Lefty returns to the scene of the crime: the Black Rock Desert.)
