MIT Press Indicts Zimmermann

Date: Thu, 01 Jun 95 16:48:51 +0200
From: rutter@MIT.EDU (Michael Rutter)
Subject: ZIMMERMANN/PGP/MIT PRESS ERROR

PLEASE POST AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

Retraction regarding : *The Official PGP User's Guide* and *PGP Source Code and Internals* by Philip R. Zimmermann

In press releases sent for the above books, the MIT Press reported that author and software designer Philip R. Zimmermann was recently "indicted by the U.S. government for exporting weapons...in the form of his invention PGP."

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS STATEMENT IS ERRONEOUS: MR. ZIMMERMANN HAS *NOT* BEEN INDICTED. HE HAS BEEN UNDER CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION.

The MIT Press apologizes to Mr. Zimmermann for this regrettable error. The information in the release was neither obtained from nor approved by Mr. Zimmermann and his legal representatives before it was distributed.

The MIT Press also apologizes to our media contacts, and asks that editors and journalists please note this change immediately with regard to any future media discussion or review of these titles.

Sincerely,
Lisa Godfrey
