ZLDF Virtual Yellow Ribbon Appeal
This is Nathaniel S. Borenstein's appeal for funds for the Zimmermann Legal Defense Fund. It's known as the "Virtual Yellow Ribbon Appeal" because it's the first time the idea of putting a notice of support for the ZLDF in signatures was widely disseminated.
Dear friends,
You're probably aware of Phil Zimmerman's difficult legal and financial
plight, which stems from his heroic efforts to make strong
cryptographic privacy available to every American. (If you're not
aware of them, you can get complete information from the web pages and
mail servers mentioned at the end of this message.)
The Zimmerman Legal Defense Fund (ZLDF) is now launching a new phase of
the fundraising drive to assist Phil. I'm proud that First Virtual has
joined ZLDF and NetResponse in this effort, with contributions of both
money and resources. With the cooperation and blessing of Phil and his
lawyers, we now have set up a new mail server and web site for the
defense fund. We are also launching a "virtual yellow ribbon" (VYR)
campaign to establish a bandwagon of visible support for Phil on the
net.
The VYR idea is simple: You add a very short bit of text to your
signature that declares your support for Phil, and tells people how to
get more information & donate money. Then, every email message you
send becomes a political act in support of the right to strong privacy
and cryptographic freedom.
Rather than burn up mailing list bandwidth by giving lots more details
about all of this, I'll just close with my signature file, which
contains pointers to where all the details can be found. Please take a
few moments and a few dollars to add your support to this worthy cause.
-- Nathaniel
PS -- Wearing my crass commercial hat, I'll also point out that if you
don't yet have a First Virtual account, this is the perfect time to get
one, because FV has agreed to make a cash donation to ZLDF for everyone
who signs up for a new FV account through the ZLDF web pages!
